The performance capacity of 12V on-board networks has finally reached its limits. The start of series production of vehicles with an additional 48V system heralds a move to the universal use of two-voltage on-board power supply systems in the automotive sector. According to the most recent market forecasts, the basic system with starter generator, 48V lithium-ion battery and DC/DC converter will have a rapid market rollout in the next few years. Despite the high costs that were originally forecast, extensive market penetration is expected as the associated reduction in CO2 emissions is something all manufacturers will have to embrace.
Because of the shift of high-power loads from 12V to 48V and the introduction of new functions at the 48V level, a function and component landscape will develop at 48V, which will also have an effect on the E/E architectures of highly electrified vehicles such as plug-in hybrid and electric automobiles.
Participants in the eehe Conference – Electrics / Electronics in Hybrid and Electric Vehicles and Electrical Energy Management on 17-18 May 2017 in Bamberg will have the opportunity to meet all major players in this important future theme of automotive development at a single event. A further highlight here will be the accompanying trade exhibition. As in previous years, the event will be held in both German and English (with simultaneous translation).

Ever stricter emissions requirements in the automotive sector are an imperative for OEMs to reassess energy saving potentials and to search for smart solutions. Besides weight reduction, powertrain electrification plays a significant role in meeting objectives. The focus is still on 48V on-board power supply and energy management. Strictly speaking, every modern passenger car in Germany can already today be considered an electric vehicle because there are hundreds of electric loads and electronic control units in all of them. In addition, a wide variety of electric and hybrid vehicles with an electric system as their main source of propulsion is available on the market.
OEMs, suppliers and research institutes, now as before, are active in furthering new mobility concepts which make cars fit for the future. The components required for the powertrains to be used in 2020 are already being developed today. Numerous OEMs and suppliers are currently finding their positions in this exciting market. To get into pole position they require expertise and knowledge in areas such as power electronics, powertrains, electric motors, battery engineering and energy efficiency. Software specialists and their expertise are needed to bring together geo-data and driving profiles so as to tackle the issues from yet another angle.
With EEHE, the outstanding conference on electric and electronic systems in hybrid and electric vehicles and electrical energy management, Haus der Technik provides ample opportunity for networking among developers, users and scientists. This week 200 experts discussed the implementation of alternative engine concepts in motor vehicles. The introduction of the Porsche 918 Spyder raised the bar even higher. Leading OEMs and suppliers then concentrated on detailed solutions in the areas of electrics/electronics for hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and electric vehicles, electric charging, management of electric energy, performance electronics, low voltage accumulators and battery management for electric energy storage, market development, highly automated driving and development models. International interest in the conference has risen further. Intensive discussions took place in both of the parallel meetings right up until the end.
Mr Soczka-Guth from Daimler showed in his lecture that cell chemistry in batteries is not witchcraft. Mrs Rothgang from ISEA in Aachen presented the latest results on service life distribution. Many more questions engaged the experts: what more can be done to lower vehicle consumption even further? When will the 48V on-board system arrive? The lectures haggled over every gram of CO2. The New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is the measure of all things in this respect. The meetings regarding performance electronics as well as the demands on the electrical system in connection with the subject of “automated driving” were well attended too. The exhibition was fully booked out for the first time this year.
The subject of hybridisation remains exciting and the great interest and the never-ending discussions mean we can expect many submissions for the next conference on 22. – 23.4.2015 in Bad Boll.
